Cromwell held prisoners here in the 1600's and the prison which operated from 1847 to 1883 is the largest ever in Ireland and Britain. In 1921 Spike held 1400 Irish war of independence prisoners, while the 1985 prison opened for young offender closed just 16 years ago in 2004.
